World Refugee Day : HI's Statement

Being a refugee is an endless story for millions of people around the world, especially for people with disabilities who face great difficulties to receive humanitarian assistance and are vulnerable to discrimination and violence : In the Middle-East, since 2011, 5.6 million Syrians have fled Syria to neighboring countries and there is no indication today that they will be able to return home...

A study conducted by by HI and iMMAP in 2018 shows that 60% of Syrian refugee households include a person with disability, and 1/5 of refugees in Lebanon and Jordan have a disability.

Refugee camps or informal settlements in urban areas are developing all over the world and are becoming permanent alternative for millions of families, like the Kakuma camp, Kenya, that was established in 1992 and still hosts 200,000 people.

In many refugee camps in the world, HI continue to support adults and children with disabilities mainly through rehabilitation care and mental health support.
