Humanity & Inclusion (HI) expresses its deep concern over the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syria, which further destabilize an already fragile region and place civilians at grave risk.
Danila Zizi, HI Country Director- Syria, says,
“These events are linked to regional instability and ongoing hostilities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, where violations of international humanitarian law remain unabated, and Lebanon, where there are continuous violations of the ceasefire.” She affirms, “The escalation of violence in multiple theatres underscores the urgent need for all parties to respect their obligations under the aegis of international law, prioritize the protection of civilians, and refrain from actions that further fuel the cycle of conflict. The continuation of hostilities not only leads to direct civilian casualties but also deepens the humanitarian crisis, displaces families, destroys vital infrastructure, and impedes access to essential services.”
HI emphasizes the long-term risks posed by explosive remnants of war. Studies indicate that 10-12% of ordnance fails to detonate upon impact, leaving behind lethal hazards that can indiscriminately harm civilians, including children, long after active fighting has ceased. The contamination of populated areas by unexploded ordnance hinders reconstruction efforts and poses a persistent threat to communities seeking to rebuild their lives.
We urge all parties involved to take concrete steps towards de-escalation and to uphold their moral and legal responsibilities to protect civilian lives and infrastructure. The international community must act with urgency to address the root causes of violence, ensure accountability for violations, and work towards a just and lasting resolution to the ongoing crises in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Syria, and the wider region.
